DWAC 40ste jaarevenement Harlingen

T
his year, the Nederlandse Dwergautoclub celebrates its 40th anniversary and are holding a special event in a special place! DWAC's 40th Annual Rally, will take place in Harlingen, on the edge of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and behind a protective dyke. This dyke is part of the strategy in the Netherland's centuries-old battle against the sea. From the campsite, Camping de Zeehoeve Westerzeedijk 45 Harlingen, you can walk on the dyke along the Wadden Sea coast.

The event takes place between Wednesday 24th and Sunday 28th August 2022, with the Rally proper, commencing Friday 26th August. It is important to book your place as soon as possible, and by Sunday 31st July 2022 at the latest. Comprehensive details, in English, and an extensive, booking form may be downloaded by clicking this link: 40th Annual Meeting of the DWAC. The easiest way to book is to visit Jaarevenement Harlingen and click on the highlighted Google forms link or just click: Jaarevenement Google form!

If you complete the downloaded form, you will need to scan and e-mail to Diana Klepper: goggo400@live.nl.

National MicroCar Rally 2022, Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th September – Update

"P
lanning for this year's NMCR is progressing extremely well" says Grant Kearney. All road runs are now confirmed and instructions prepared and checked. Ray Glendinning has driven the routes in his Isetta to verify their suitability and parking has been checked. The rural country lanes of North Yorkshire and quaint market towns are ideal microcar territory. The annual rally memento has been designed, produced, delivered and will be well received. The on-site bar and restaurant will be available throughout the rally and evening activities are currently being planned.

As of the 13th July 2022, there are 50 pitches and 3 pods booked at Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park. Whilst there are still pitches available, we would recommend prior booking. Entry to the site - every person/unit that arrives to reception will be given their own personal gate entry number, which is not transferable. If someone arrives 'out of hours' you will see a telephone number to ring and you will be attended to. Please support your club and the NMCR by ensuring you attend this year's rally.

Ray can be contacted at: bubblecarray@gmail.com; via Messenger at the NMCR Facebook page or by telephone: 01274 218455 (mobile: 07977 445694).

Bubble Bath Rally 2022

Bubble Bath Rally 2022 (Teresa Swinford)Bubble Bath Rally 2022 (Teresa Swinford)

H
eld over the weekend of the 1st – 3rd July 2022, the Bristol Microcar Club Rally, was, so I understand, a deliberately low-key event to test what was a new venue, for the first rally after a two-year, enforced sabbatical!

Sadly, my own ability to attend Rallies of any description has been severely limited for the past ten years or so, but what was the Bath Microcar Rally was always at the top of my agenda, being a West of England event and where I could guarantee to meet up with good, like-minded friends.

I thank Alan Hitchcock for providing the basis and inspiration for this ‘second-hand' report, based largely on his Facebook article, which you can read in full here: (to open in a new tab, control click — Good Weekend). However, I hope the following will achieve a more diverse audience and encourage a repeat of the event in 2023., which in all fairness has struggled a little, for several years now. I would also like to acknowledge Wynford Jones' daughter, Teresa Swinford, who posted a number of photographs of the event on Facebook, one of which I have used, and which were shared by the Rally venue, Sweet's Tea Rooms on their own Facebook page, here: (to open in a new tab, control click — Sweets Tea Rooms).

Taking and driving your Messerschmitt abroad…

O
ver the past few years, driving your own car through Europe has become rather more complicated. Immediately following our departure from the European Union, we needed insurance green cards to prove the correct level of car insurance when travelling to Europe. This requirement was then abolished in August 2021 after the European Commission reviewed the law, but the rules still require holders of paper driving licences (issued before April 1999) to apply for an International Driving Permit.

Furthermore, travel restrictions were imposed from April 2020 until late 2021, as a result of the CoviD pandemic. Even now, problems continue regarding travel as a result of staffing issues, so you will need to book your crossing early and be prepared for delays.

These complexities aside, the major thing to consider when driving in Europe is whether your car is as well protected as when you're in the UK. After all, if you were to break down or be involved in a road accident, you need to be able to make a valid claim.

This is where European Driving Cover comes in – and is completely essential if you want to take your own vehicle to Europe and drive it there. European driving cover is an extension of your UK-based insurance cover and effectively makes your motor insurance valid in the majority of European countries.

Typically, a car insurance policy with European driving included will give you up to 90 days of cover for driving on the continent. Not every policy includes European Driving Cover as standard, but classic car and multi-car cover from some specialist Classic Car Insurance providers, does, and you can even extend to 180 days in some cases if you happen to be travelling more. You will need to check your documents and amend if necessary.

Gone are the days when I used to sling a tent, a sleeping bag, a change of underwear and a toothbrush into the back of the KR200, and set off for the ferry with my ticket, passport and a few French Francs, Belgian Francs, German Marks and/or Dutch Guilders, depending where I was heading (thank goodness for the Euro)!

South Midlands Microcar Camping Weekend - May 2022

A
lan Hitchcock is arranging a South Midlands Microcar Camping Weekend, to be held over the weekend of Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd of May 2022. All small cars and contraptions invited.

An informal event based at the National Trust's Fleece Inn, in Bretforton, near Evesham, which is where we have a monthly Microcar Club Night. The Inn has an orchard which we may use as the camping area. It has electric hook up points for those that wish them. The CAMRA 'approved' draught beer and cider on tap is excellent, and both the Pub and food has won awards, including their Pies - fighting talk to our Northern chums. It is also the spiritual home of Asparagus (See separate Asparagus Run on 23rd of April). It lies in the Vale Of Evesham, with The Cotswolds spread out to the east and south.

2021 AGM at the Fleece Inn - 30th October 2021

A
reminder that after a year's CoviD related break, Members are cordially invited to attend the Club's Annual General Meeting, to be held on Saturday 30th October 2021 at the Fleece Inn, Bretforton, Worcestershire, WR11 7JE ( https://thefleeceinn.co.uk/ - Image, courtesy Adam Quellin, shows a painting of the Fleece Inn, on exhibit by the National Trust, at Croome Court, Worcestershire). Hopefully this will not come as a surprise since all should have received an earlier, mailing!

Our late October meeting should benefit from reasonable weather as well as a lighter evening, immediately before the end of British Summer Time. The plan is to start the AGM at 10am, with the intention of having the more 'formal' proceedings first, taking any Reports, reviewing the Club Accounts and electing a Committee to see us through the next twelve months. Copies of the Club Accounts for the years ending 30th September 2020 and 2021, will be available at the meeting. We will then take Any Other Business, detailed in the Agenda, a copy of which you should have received, by e-mail, beforehand. Please let our Honorary Secretary, Tony Yates, know if you have not received copies of the Agenda, or Minutes of the 2019 AGM, and wish to see them, and also any views that you may have on the future direction of the Club.

Welcome Back to KaRoscene

W
elcome Back. Did you miss us? Our humblest apologies for going AWOL since December 2020, and not for CoviD-19 related reasons!

As you know, we are a small club, run by Messerschmitt Enthusiasts for Messerschmitt Enthusiasts. We are all volunteers, devoting as much of our spare time as we can to the Club and even fettling our ‘Schmitts (I wish!). Some of us don't have much time to spare, with family often having to come first, and some of us lucky ones, even have full-time jobs!

Anyway, excuses aside, we are back and hope to continue keeping Members and friends informed with the latest Messerschmitt related news, on this, the one and only ‘official' Messerschmitt Enthusiasts' Club website.

Finally, we would be delighted to share any stories or photographs that you might have through KaRoscene, and if you feel that you would like to contribute in any other way to the running of the Club, please get in touch. The easiest way is to e-mail your contributions to: editorial@messerschmittclub.org or get in touch with either our Club Chairman Mark or Club Secretary Tony.
